Someone is stalking Private Investigator Sharon McCone. Someone knows where she lives, where she works, who she loves, who her friends are. The Mystery Woman gives out McCone's business cards and accepts assignments in her name. She picks up men in bars and sleeps with them, identifying herself as Sharon McCone. McCone, heroine of nineteen mystery stories by the excellent Marcia Muller, feels uncharacteristically despairing and powerless. Madame X is draining energy from McCone's soul. The fact that romantic love interest Hy Ripinsky is on assignment as a hostage negotiator in Brazil does not make matters easier.
Life Invasion. Theft of identity. The miraculous information age of computers, cell phones, electronic transfer of funds has made us all vulnerable to crazies with vendettas as never before. "While Other People Sleep" makes the issue visible via good story-telling and information about the mechanics and psychology of stalking. The plot turns around when McCone figures out who her shadow must be. Then McCone begins her own investigation, smoking out her nemesis. On television, stalkers are stopped when victims lure them into a shoot-out and a so-called "justifiable" homicide in self-defense occurs. Muller's admirable heroine has a more rational and effective solution which this reviewer will not betray.
I like McCone. She's active. She loves and is loyal to family and friends. She's got a great romance. She owns her own business. She's not politically correct. Her vulnerabilities and psychological development give her dilemma a literary dimension. I recommend this book for information about potential violations of privacy and for reading pleasure.
